The Fastest Athlete In The World…

By Alex On August 3, 2009 Under Sports Training

Mondays can be pretty boring. As I sat here typing and eating a monstrous turkey, tomato and mustard sandwich on Ezikiel bread, I decided I wanted to get a good discusion going here (could be fun, right?).

So, today, I have a question for YOU:

Who is the fastest athlete you have ever seen, on TV, in person, played against, whatever. Tell me the fastest, quickest, most explosive athlete you have ever seen.

I’ll start right here:

Darren Sproles.

Oh. My. God.

I’m not a fan of the Chargers or anything like that, but I will watch any of their games JUST to watch Sproles. He is the quickest, sharpest, most agile athlete I’ve ever seen.

His burst off the snap is ridiculous, his change-of-pace is unheard of and his top-end speed is brutal.

Just watch this:

My Honorable Mention List:

1. Barry Sanders

2. Earl Boykins

3. TJ Ford

4. Nook Logan (MLB)

5. Leandro Barbosa

Now, I want to hear who you think is the quickest, fastest athlete around. Let me know right below in the comments section.

Talk to you below!

-Alex

Henry Cejudo, Stephen Abas, John Smith, Angel Cejudo. All Olympic/World quality wrestlers. There are several other wrestlers who would make some of those previously mentioned athletes look like they were standing still in actual functional movements as warrior athletes.
I admire football/baseball/etc. athletes, but wrestlers were the original world athletes that are too often ignored/overlooked.

I really don’t know .. but the record for straight ahead speed in the 60mm dash is Usain Bolt .. now when you start talking agility and other specifics …thats a whole other ballgame … the outfielder for the Pirates, don’t know his name ..# 22, he can flat out fly around the bases and then thats something else too … people say I am fast but I think I am quick and anticipate .. softball player

Ronaldinho of two years ago. He’s obviously enjoying his money and not training so hard. This may not be popular but OJ circa 1968. Both had sheer, speed, power and unmatched agility.

Zach

August 3, 2009

Andrew mccutchen is the fastest moat agile in baseball now, Ricky Henderson used to be full speed in 2-3 steps that’s why he is the best base stealer of all time. Carl Crawford is up there as well.

Guys, Americans seems to think only football and basketball but rugby players, soccer and tennis players are far more better athletes in terms of speed ,agility and endurance, couples names Rafael Nadal (tennis), thierry Henry (soccer)…

The fastest ever is Usain Bolt hands down… and maybe there are athletes that began running faster or should I say more explosively than Usain but anyways I doubt that if you look at it like pound for pound who ius the best athlete it is 100% Bolt… but anyways respect for posting the clip of Darren Sproles. Its good to see little man succed…

Ladies Ladies the fast and most physically gifted athelete is Randy Moss. If the ball is in the air he catches it. The second fastest is Noel Devine out of WVU. I hate WVU with a passion but he is so shifty. He is a lot like D Sproles only better.

Bob

August 3, 2009

This raises the question of size and leg turnover. Sproles is 5’6″ and 181 lbs. That is a short leg and a proportionally heavy compact muscular body. Is this proof that to be fast and agile you have to be muscular? And that a short limb turns over faster than a long limb? If so, why aren’t there more short powerful basketball players? Or basketball players who go for muscle mass?

Doug

August 3, 2009

I am going to go back a few years and say Herschel Walker. He was fast, explosive and he would run right over you if he had to.

Check it, this be Usain Bolt comin’ to you live from Jamaica. Hands down, I have the highest top end speed of any athlete in the world (jah Tyson Gay, I said it), but as far as explosiveness out of the blocks and quickness go, there be a athlete that is much faster than me. Who you ask?
American sprinter, Walter Dix (respect)
that little guy is lightning
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9EB4e6e94Y
check this video out. It be walter running a 3.75 second 40 yard dash (for the record, no one has ever run under 4 seconds at the NFL combine)
Now i can’t be absolutely certain, but after having watched several of Alex Maroko’s videos, I be pretty sure he is the person filming and narrating this video….

Obviously Usain Bolt is the ‘fastest’ athlete in the world. Straight line speed wise. But in terms of change of direction and agility, no way.

And the most agile, fastest and most overall athletic man in the NFL, whoever it is. Which is up for debate obviously. Would blow the doors off the the best rugby, tennis, soccer players.

Adrian Bazemore

August 3, 2009

Deion Sanders in his day. Hands down! Michael Vick for football. Tyson Gay for track.

August 3, 2009

Darren sproles might be the quickest by far, he’s like a bar of soap and impossible to tackle…but here are some guys that weren’t mentioned:

Steve Smith, Reggie Bush, adrian peterson (for his size), steve smith again, steve smith another time

Oscar Nunez Rodriguez

August 3, 2009

well the fastest must athletic player i ever saw is by far Bo Jackson. He was a complete athlete power, speed, agility, intelligence and just brutal skills either on the baseball field or on the football skill. I mean he was like 6’1” 230+ lbs and still ran a 6.18 60 yard dash, that is remarkable. Is not because his my favorite athlete but i don’t think no one can have as much power as he need and still have so much athletism and speed.

As far as flat out straight ahead speed, Usain Bolt definetely wins.
I mostly watch basketball so…..

Lebron James (most explosive although it doesn’t seem like it because he’s big)
Derrick Rose
Allen Iverson (when he was young)
Dwayne Wade
Tony Parker (surprised no one else has put him on their list)

Manu Ginoboli is really quick too even though its mostly because of how deceptive he is off the dribble not flat out speed

A lot of people underestimate Jonny Flynn because he is 5’11. His speed/quickness mix is elite though and he has the ballhandling skills to keep up with him which is why I consider him a monster.
Derrick Rose is also another raw athlete.

I know for sure that most basketball players could benefit from some heavy squatting. :D

August 3, 2009

Alex this is a great discussion that you started. As a former sprinter I am biased but we are training for that one sole purpose is pure speed.

I would LOVE to see Usain Bolt vs. Ben Johnson, Maurice Green, Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay…this even could easily sell for $1000 just for a 10 second race. I think they would have to get DON KING to promote that one

Ben is the man though because it took about 20 years before someone beat his record and the first to do it was Justin Gatlin but like 2 weeks later they said that “it was not official” then Tyson Gay.

This is a tough one but I would say Usain Bolt just because his 100m sprint was really a jog but MAurice Green ran like 50 sub 10 sec 100 meters. the most in history.

The 100meter crown is not one that is worn for long so the next big level track and field event will be something to be seen

side note: good god FLO JO was so fine!!

JaKobe24

August 4, 2009

Where’s Devin Hester in this list the guy is extremely fast and has side to side speed as well, and no one is as explosive as Reggie Bush, Ocho-Cinco is like lightning out there and at his size no one is as quick as Kobe Bryant, and for explosiveness you have to throw LeBron James in there and don’t forget Nate “The Great” Robinson
Of course in velocity it’s Usian Bolt

gilzero

August 4, 2009

teo walcott!!!

SchW

August 4, 2009

If u look in to the past you can throw in also Mike Jordan since in his North Carolina days he was close to 10.00 zero in 100m sprint and since he did not even trained sprint…and he was also very explosive and afetr pistons brutally beat him up he gained even a lot more muscles and he was still faster than almost anyone in the league and he was already 30…and for his jumping ability and pure change of direction…he did not even had to dribble around players…he just paused for a split sec and he was passed his defenders…just look at the old tapes…Kobe aint got nothing on him. And for pure speed I watched some video analysis and a video tehnician measured Lebron´s speed for 40yards. Between 4.1-4.2. You can throw in also Derrick Rose and of course A.I. And Dennis Rodman could compete in the 400m trials because he was arguably in the top 5 in 400 metres in the NCAA years.

Sumthin to argue;)

The most explosive athlete ever is Michael Jordan. People just forget that because he was also so skilled at the same time, but his explosiveness put His Airness above everyone else.

Wow, these are some pretty cool responses, I’ve been YouTubing a lot of guys I’ve never seen or heard of before. It is clear, speed is ALIVE and kicking.

@Nil-I would love to see that battle. That’s easily a million-dollar showcase.

If you wanted to go by sport, I would say:

Baseball- Carl Crawford

Basketball- Nate Robinson

Hockey- Martin St Louis

Soccer- WOW, too tough.. someone help me out here!

Blatantly agree with “coach claude” above, gotta look outside of the american bubble. Bryan Habana of the South African rugby team is the quickest and most agile being on two legs to currently walk the planet. This guy breaks opposition ankles with his side steps and burns guys over 20, 40, 60 even 80 meters.

Nobody, NOBODY made people look stupid like Barry Sanders. Might be he was ahead of his time, but his football highlights are the equivalent of MJ on the hardwood.
