Lifting Weights For The “Less” Younger Ones…

As I sit here writing this blog post, it’s a little past Midnight on a breezy Saturday night, and I’m here, (in my twenties nonetheless) writing about getting faster, and lifting weights and how to continue to get stronger even as you age…you tell me, do I need a life or what?

Overused jokes aside, I’m continuing the push to answer all of those great question I got in the now infamous post Do You Need To Lift Weights.

Today’s question comes from William. William is 46 years old, looking to add some lean muscle tissue and DOES NOT want to waste time. Here’s his question:

“What weight lifting do you recommend for a 46 year old man? (I’ve) been lifting on and off for years…want to grow muscle, not waste my time. I have a club membership and I stay flexible to play golf. I especially need to build my upper body. Thank you.

This is cool William and we can definitely help you out here…

While we all already know lifting weights and getting stronger WILL make us faster, it also has a host of other benefits:

  • Increased metabolism (burn more fat while doing less)
  • Increased power output and force absorption
  • Increased anaerobic and aerobic conditioning (better shape overall)
  • Decreased risk of injury (avoid injuries, less aches and pains and feel better overall)
  • Increased attractiveness to the opposite sex (seriously. guys, try looking up something called the Adonis Ratio…cool stuff!)

William is TOTALLY on the right track with his thinking. He knows all of the massive benefits of resistance training and even though he made note that he’s 46, you can resistance train and build muscle at any age (it really is just a number!).

Now, when I see that William says his training has been on/off for the last few years, I’d be willing to wager that he isn’t in top physical shape right now, and it would behoove him (AND his health) to build a solid base of strength and balance before beginning any serious weight-training program.
