Core Training Questions…

By Alex On September 15, 2009 Under Sports Training

I’m in the heart of Chicago right now as I write this in an Einstein’s Bagel, with the Sear’s Tower just a block away from me….man, that is one tall building!

Anyways, I stopped here to get some food and thought’d it be cool if I made a post here on Game Speed Insider because truthfully, I’m curious about something and now, I just gotta know…

…what do you want to know about core training?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last 5 years, you are well aware of the fad-term “core training” and have also probably heard all of the conflicting reports about how to really train your core to get faster, more explosive and more agile.

It’s also likely that all of that twisted core-training hoopla has left you at least a little confused…so:

What questions do you have about core training?

That’s all I want today, questions about core training.

Just go down to the Comments section right now, and leave me your biggest core training question, then in the next week or so, I’ll get ‘em answered for you.

So, if you want to know the best core exercises, the worst core exercises, the best core training program, if crunches really work, etc, go down to the Comments section now and let me know!

Make it happen!

Alex

What is the best way to screen the core and “Grade it” in order to track progress? Should the screens be different for each sport and if so, where can I find them?

Core training, what an overused buzzword….Ive seen a sample speed workout of yours, but I was wondering if yo do good mornings, reverse hyperextensions, lat pulldowns, and gymnastic exercises like the frogstand and planache.
Ive been researching strength, power and speed training for the past several weeks online, some sources good, others just selling a program….Crossfit seems to have quite the stable of exercises that are beneficial…..I havent been convinced to purchase your program yet though.

Here you go…
My ten year old is gaining weight and size quickly (5′1″ 115 lbs) and is showing great athletic ability. His main sport now is Baseball and with his size of course he is behind the dish. Although his stamina seems adequate now, as his size continues, what sort of Core regiment would you suggest to maintain strength, agility and stamina as he grows?

I’m not able to access a gym so I was wondering what kinds of exercises do you recommend that I could do at home and how often should I be doing them? I’m really trying to get ready for my high school basketball season coming up and I need core training to help build my speed, quickness and explosiveness. Thanks!

Is core training really all that? How often should you train it?
Also, if you have time you should try to give people a sample core workout that’s efficient and isn’t just “10 x 999 sit ups before going to sleep” like many people think.

I struggle to put a good core training program together, due to gaps between core exercise levels. For example am finding it easy kneeling on a core ball and keeping balance, but not able to make the step up to going from kneeling up to standing on the ball.

If your workout has a good number of complex exercises, squats, deadlifts, lunges etc. is there a need to focus specifically on the core to get it stronger? If you believe there is, what would you suggest a trainee should add to their work out if they’re already doing a lot of the exercises above?

I’ve heard that a strong core prevents injuries, but how do you devolop the smaller muscles inside your core, besides the ones that make you look like a six pack? I currently have a strained lower back and supposedly its from not working these smaller muscles. What are some good full core exercises, that can make me more stable and less susceptible to injury?

As an athlete who has had double hernia operations in the past 18 months i’ve spent alot of time trying to rehab my core.. My goal was to build a strong functional core to protect me from injury… which i’m happy to say i completed my first injury free season in 5 years, if anything i’ve noticed a little loss in power and a bigger loss in agility, even though my core is arguably stronger than it ever was pre op, according to measurements and tests conducted with the use of a “CHATTANOOGA STABILIZER” should i worry less about core work and more about my body weight to strength ratio in exercises like the squat and deadlift? and the agility question in particular, that quickness you talk about has seemingly left me, i feel like i’ve gone from being an elite athlete to being a mediocre one. very frustrating.

Alex, This question was posted earlier about core workouts pertaining to kids. My son is 11 years old 130lbs and 5 ft. I am been reading several of your workouts and they are really complete. We have been playing with push ups, pull ups, and other body weight type things. I was wondering if you have a 3 or 4 day workout on a kids level. I have trained as a college athlete and have a major in kinesiology and have written workouts for him. Of course Alex, I am dad and I dont know anything so it means more when it comes from outside.

I’m approaching 30 this year and in the armed forces and want to know what are the three best exercises to develop all round core strength to get towards the six pack and are there any exercises that I should avoid as an exercise to develop the core. I saw an info-mercial on tv the other day that talked about training like six different core muscles, and claimed that crunches only work two. It talked about inner core muscles, and how the program would make you feel like you built a girdle around your mid-section. Are these claims legitimate, and would this type of program be useful for an athlete seeking explosive strength, or just for people who want to look good when their stomach is exposed?
