Athletes Bodyweight Training And Exercises In Cancun…

By Alex On March 18, 2010 Under Sports Training

I spent last week in Cancun, you know, “where the wild things are”, BUT…

…it wasn’t all socializing and partying (too bad, right?). Almost every morning, while my buddies were on the beach “gaming and shaming”, I was in the warped and twisted hotel weight room, getting my sweat on!

I managed to capture some video of some of the workouts for you, but as you’ll see below in the video below, the weight room there was hopelessly weak!

The squat rack was the missing the barbell, the dumbbells only went up to 50 lbs. and when I even decided to give the machines a shot, I found that they only worked for half the repetition (the resistance disappeared for the eccentric portion of the lift — which to me, as I’m in a “muscle-building” focused stage is most important, since most of the muscular damage and the hormonal response it initiates comes from those intense eccentric contractions).

You would think you can’t get a good, athletic-specific workout in such a situation, right?

WRONG!

Where there’s an Alex, there’s a way and the solution dawned on me on morning two…I could finally put to use this AWESOME bodyweight training exercise guide I picked up a while ago from world-renowned bodyweight trainer and my good friend, Adam Steer and do some killer, fast-paced and athletically-based bodyweight workouts.

The guide is called ‘Bodyweight Revolution” and it contains TONS of brand-new bodyweight exercises that you can use with no equipment, little to no “space” and these fresh, fun exercises are perfect for:

* Athletes without access to a gym or tons of up-to-date equipment

* People who want quicker, shorter workouts without sacrificing results

* Youth athletes who aren’t quite ready or mature enough to start using weight training in their workout programs

* Anyone looking for TONS of new, fun exercises to challenge their bodies and to keep their bodies guessing

Here’s the footage I filmed from Cancun. I hope you like it!

(57-second mark: YES, I snuck into the exercise room…thought I thought it’d be more James Bond-like…it was. Also, I couldn’t find the “non-swearing” version of this song above…MY bad!)

Now, I’m CURIOUS….what are some of your favorite body weight exercises?

Let me know in the Comments Section below and when we get 15 responses, I’ll be sure to get Adam to FILM a specific video JUST for the you, the Game Speed Subscribers, revealing some brand new body weight exercises JUST for athletes and some easy ways you can use them in your training (but we need 15 before I go and ask him for the favor since he is ALREADY hooking you guys up with an unbelievably valuable package NEXT WEEK like I said in the video).

See you in the comments section!

Alex

I liked the upper body stuff. I was missing the pistol squats though. Are you saving those for he strength-focussed phase, or what?

Oh wow…ok, my favourite BW exercises RIGHT NOW are pushups, chinups and pistol squats, because I can actually do them, to some degree. However, I WANT to learn to do the more difficult BW exercises sometime, like handstand pushups(one or both hands), planches, levers and the crosses on rings. I would love to be able to do those someday

I like static holds, such as planks, side planks, and horse pose (great for core and trunk stability). Another great exercise is glute-ham raise. This really gets the posterior chain working to increase speed. More on the strength side, pull/chins-ups do the trick

My favorite body weight exercise are one leged jump squats. But the only person I know that can do it is me. I have never met somebody else who can do it.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the words — that gym did totally suck, huh? :-)

That weird looking pushup is straight from Adam’ Bodyweight Revolution and is called a “screwing arm press-up” and it is FUN.

Also, that song from Drake is called “Get Over It”, and yeah, I don’t see myself getting over it at all anytime soon. Heh.

Take care, be strong,

Alex

I don’t know what it’s called but theres a good exersise where you hold yourself up on your forearms and toes. Kinda hurts if you do it on a hard surface though.

Pushups and planks…have started to do similar movements you showed in doing pushup into plank. Trying to get into getups.
